If you’re lucky enough to own a RAM truck, then you’re probably well versed in proper truck maintenance. This probably means that you change the oil every three- to four-thousand miles, and of course you’re doing it all yourself! The handy folks at Thornton Road Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram would like to remind you that while oil may all seem to be the same, they definitely are not! Truck engines are usually designed with a specific type, viscosity, and amount of oil in mind. In addition, the RAM truck you’ve chosen probably has a certain way you use it – either for work or as a daily driver – and the oil you choose affects how your RAM truck operates for you under these conditions, too. So how do you choose the best oil for a RAM truck? Here are some guidelines:
Check the Manufacturer Suggestions
Again, the engine has been created to work with a certain type/viscosity of oil. Check your manual for what the suggested viscosity is. Unless you’ve modified your engine in any way, you can’t go wrong with this!
Consider Your Mileage
If your RAM truck is relatively new, you’ll be in good shape just using the suggested oil. If your truck has high mileage, however, it may benefit from an oil that has some extra anti-wear agents and corrosion inhibitors.
Think of the Weather
Depending on where you live and what season it is, your car may be spending some frigid nights out in the snow. The colder the temperature, the less easy it is for your oil to flow. The lower the number here, the less it thickens in the cold so in a cold climate, you’d probably want a 0W or 5W viscosity. Conversely, if it’s summer and hot (like it gets here in Georgia!) you’d want a much higher number so the oil won’t thin out too much!
Of course, there are a ton of other things you can look for – synthetics, additives, and specialty oils – but you have your RAM truck to drive it, not spend all your time buying oil for it! The bottom line is that your truck should be given the oil that helps it run for optimum performance…everything else is just extra!
